Старейшие постоянные поселения на территории современного штата Северная Каролина, на берегах залива Албемарл [ Albemarle Sound]. Первое было основано в 1653 выходцами из Вирджинии во главе с Р. Грином [Green, Roger] на участке земли у берега р. Роанок [ Roanoke River]. В 1662 Дж. Залив Атлантического океана в штате Северная Каролина. Длина 80 км, ширина 10-25 км. Отделяется от океана песчаной косой Китти-Хок [Kitty Hawk barrier beach], пересекается Береговым каналом [ Intracoastal Waterway]. Главный порт Элизабет-Сити [ Elizabeth City] в устье р. Паскуотанк [Pasquotank River]. На побережье залива были основаны Албемарлские поселения [ Albemarle Settlements]. Залив был открыт и исследован в 1585 и назван в честь герцога Албемарлского Дж.
